Gus Hansen, born February 13, 1974, just outside Copenhagen, Denmark was always good at sports—especially tennis—but he also had a fascination for numbers and math which led him to be a world class backgammon player.
Hansen moved to New York City—hanging out in the gin rummy and backgammon clubs with guys like
Huck Seed and
Phil Laak—hoping to play backgammon professionally—but when he found the field of players too scant and the prize pools too small he turned to poker.
He played his first World Series of Poker tournament in 1996, but when he was eliminated on day one, he quickly realized he was not quite ready for the big leagues. He started making frequent trips to Las Vegas, playing cash games and perfecting a winning style of play—which is loose and aggressive.
From 2002 on, he was ready to play and win—he won four World Poker Tour titles, including two $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em events—the Five Diamonds World Poker Classic and the LA Poker Classic. Because he is the only player to win three WPT open tournament events, Hansen was inducted into the WPT Walk of Fame along with
Doyle Brunson and James Garner.
Even though Gus has finished in the money five times at the
World Series of Poker, he has yet to claim a bracelet—he has also placed in the money at the WPT nine times and twice in the EPT—and his total live tournaments winnings exceed $7,200,000.
Hansen won
Poker Stars Superstars Invitational Tournament winning $1,000.000 and he won $51,500,000 in 2007 when he took first place in the Aussie Millions in Melbourne. He is a spokes person for Frank Q—a Danish fashion line for men—that he wears exclusively for his public appearances and he is a member of Team Full Tilt at
Full Tilt Poker.
Although Gus is a regular player in the big game in “Bobby’s Room” at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas, it hasn’t always treated him well. He admits to heavy losses there and at sports betting.
Gus lives in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and if he is not playing poker, he likes to play golf, tennis, squash and soccer. He likes to spend time with his young niece, Sally, and believes she will be his first poker protégé.
