Humberto Brenes

Humberto Brenes began gambling by playing baccarat and from there moved into poker. He became a regular poker tournament player in 1988, just 14 years after he began playing tournaments (1974). Now a professional poker player, Brenes finished 4th in the 1988 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event, claiming a prize of $83,050. He has two WSOP bracelets and has cashed more than 40 times at the WSOP. His bracelets were won in 1993 in Pot Limit Omaha and limit Texas Holdem. In 2006, he was tied with Phil Hellmuth, Jr. for the highest number of WSOP money finishes—eight.

Brenes has also made final tables at the World Poker Tour (WPT) three times and took down the Jack Binion 2002 World Poker Open where he sent Erik Seidel out in 2nd place. 2009 finds Brenes live tournament winnings over $5,500,000 with his 55 WSOP cashes accounting for over $2Million of that amount.

Brenes was born on May 8th, 1951, and lives with his wife and three children in San Jose, Costa Rica. Known as the Shark, Brenes uses a shark card protector while playing live poker—possibly using it on the keyboard when he plays online as a member of Team PokerStars. Humberto’s brothers, Alex Brenes and Erick Brenes, have both won World Poker Tour titles. The Brenes brothers can be found at most major tournaments around the world. You’ll spot Humberto with his bright clothing, a visor, and two pairs of glasses on top of each other. Be sure to watch out for the shark.
