The reason many cash poker players fail to do well in tournaments is the two tiered game. Not only are you required to play poker well you must also make calculated plays based on your position in the tournament, the second game. The converse is also true.

Now, let's put the foregoing to use in constructing a bankroll plan. How should you proceed? First, you should begin by determining your own salary or wage. If you are playing indefinitely, then you'll need a yearly amount you want to earn. If you are playing for only a few months, then set a total for those months. For example, you might set a yearly goal of $30K.

In a previous article in which my focus was moving up in limits, I addressed bankroll as it applies to the amateur player. The amateur does not need to make money playing poker and so can afford to take shots more aggressively than can someone who depends on poker income.

This year I've spent 3 or 4 nights a week in a series of poker tournaments ran by the U.S. Military Club system in Japan. Since most of the people are Club managers, few really have experience with poker tournaments. They gave a great try and for many of our service members it was a good poker learning experience.

Recently at a home game one of the regular losers sat lamenting those hands that he would have won had he stayed in to the river, or saw the flop. Today I want to discuss a play that is underutilized by no limit hold'em players. Rest assured, plenty of players use it and understand it, but for those who do not, which is most, you can use it quite effectively. What is a blocking bet? Typically it is a bet that one makes on the river to block a bigger bet by your opponent.

We've all talked for years about pot odds to call a bet; you need 3.5:1 to call for a flush, 7:1 to call for a gutshot, 1,000,000:1 to call against the Hammer, whatever.

I don't write about Omaha often, but I do play. When the experts can't really agree on a strategy that works, I'm not about to claim to know the secret to the game, but I can attest to one thing; Any hand that relies on a nine as an operative card, other than A-9 suited, is not a good starting hand.
