Poker plays with PokerPeaker - Folding Aces
I have A-A.
I have the nuts. At least, I do right now.
Darn that flop.
I'm playing $25 NL on PokerStars. I have A♠-A♣.
I also have no reads on the players, although it seems so far like a pretty normal, tight table.
I raise $1.25. It's five times the big blind, but I've found a big raise with a big pair at the lower levels helps prevent six callers and ruining your Aces. Those of you mini-raising with A-A hoping to get action are looking to lose a lot of big pots.
Remember, your hand is only a pair after the flop. You want to play it heads-up.
I get two callers from people who limped in the pot. That's OK; I'll have position on them.
The flop comes Q♦-3♣-7♦.
This is not a bad flop for me. In fact it's a good one.
It's checked to me.
I bet the pot. It's still a pair and there's a draw out there. I'd rather just end the hand right now or at least drive one person out. I wouldn't mind slow-playing this a bit if I was heads-up, but with two players out there, the chances are just too high that someone is drawing.
The first player raises me, the size of the pot.
The second player shoves.
Whoa!
Really?
OK, so not only did one player check-raise me, essentially the second player did as well, only he shoved his whole stack in, after my pre-flop raise and bet of the pot. And he did so without any regard to the fact that a third player was in the hand.
Believe it or not, this is a fairly easy fold. I never like to say good-bye to Aces, but I'm clearly beat. I can't imagine what they have - it's possible one is even pushing on a draw - but I think one of them may have flopped a set. A limp and then a call of a raise and then severe interest in the pot often indicates that.
It turns out one of them did have a set and the other had a flush draw. He hit his flush on the turn.
I saved myself some money by divorcing myself from the nuts.
After all, it's only the nuts before the damn flop.
